Your Basic Pantry Items
Your basic and certainly ideal pantry contains mostly store brands. Invest in these items, or in the items you do not have already in your pantry, and make many recipes with only little money to spend. When shopping for produce, check your local produce stand, farm market and Asian markets. Their prices are often much less, they sell produce loose, so you can buy 1 zucchini, if you only need 1, not a package of 4.
Instead of having parsley, oregano, basil, rosemary, our basic pantry has Italian Seasoning, because it has all 4 of these herbs, and can be used in lasagna, pasta, salads, pizza, marinades, vegetable dishes etc. As an advocate for sea salt, we understand being reluctant when you have to make ends meet, so our budget pantry has kosher salt. Much cheaper than sea salt, but much better than regular table salt. Store brands, and cheaper brands of dried herbs and spices are just as great to use, you just have to keep an eye on the expiration date, because they will lose their flavor when getting too old.
Especially people who haven’t been cooking much, and don’t have a lot of experience, being overwhelmed by all the different herbs and spices, ingredients and different version of an item, we have crated this basic pantry.
A big thing to remember is that cheaper items, usually of the same quality of the products on eye-level are located either very low or very high. Be wary of products placed at children’s eye-level, because those shelves often hold attractive items you do not need.
Here are the basics, and we shopped around online to compare prices of different grocery stores. Your basic pantry comes to a total of $ 60.60, but supplies you with a wide variety of basic ingredients for lots of different food types.

My Aim is to Someday Get My Wings!
Flying and airplanes have always fascinated me. The first time I piloted a Piper Cub airplane all by myself was at the Red Bank Airport in New Jersey, years ago, around 1957. My first solo flight happened after many months of training after my instructor was sure I’d finally learned enough to go up without him.
It seemed easy and natural then, but I know now that flying an airplane does not come naturally to anyone. It takes lots of practice, attention to detail, study, alertness to what’s going on and even – some guts. Let me explain –
First, for me to get that plane to leave the ground, there had to be enough power, but not too much. Then the ground speed and rate of acceleration had to be precisely coordinate with the angle of attack of the wings until lift was achieved. Once off the ground, I had to pay attention to my rate of climb, watch to be sure I cleared the tall trees at the end of the runway, look around for other aircraft and at the same time coordinate the movements of my hands and feet and keep a watchful eye on all the instruments. Simple! Yes, my first solo takeoff, flight around the field, and then a good safe landing was an event I’ll always remember.
In short, as a student pilot, I had to commit myself to the task with determined dedication. What followed was a gradual, but sure growth of my skills as a pilot. It was a struggle filled with lots of ups, downs, poor takeoffs, worse landings and much frantic prayer for God’s immediate help. Learning to fly was often frustrating, scary, exciting and, probably one of the reasons why I now have white hair! Yes, it was a maturing experience to say the least. As I think about it, I’ve come to another conclusion – it’s this: –
Learning how to fly and learning how to live as a Christian have much in common. Both require lots of skill, study, dedication and prayer. I’ve had to learn, and un-learn, lots of things in order to be sure God would be pleased with my daily attempts at Christian “flight” with Him. In fact, there are many times when both God and I get scared by the foolish things I do and we both want to bail out and say to each other: “Forget it!”
